Unwrap UVW Template Tutorial

Hello folks! It is my second day working as a part time instructor at TIP. I am assigned to teach them in developing 3D Game. Some of my students did not follow the lesson so I decided to create a quick tutorial in applying UVW Texture using 3Ds Max 2011. :)

Requirements

  • Adobe Photoshop (CS Version)
  • 3Ds Max 2011

We need to create a simple building with building texture on it so using the control panel >> create tab, let’s create a box. Your output should be like this.

After creating a box, we need to create a UVW Template so under the control panel, click the modify tab. On modifier list, choose “Unwrap UVW”

Next is collapse the Unwrap UVW option and choose “Face” and click Edit on the Parameters Menu.

After clicking the Edit button, a new window will open where you can create UVW Template of your existing 3D model. All you have to do is to go to Mapping Menu and click Flatten mapping… Your output should be like this.

Next, we are going to create a UVW Template of our 3D Model, to get a UVW Template, Click on the Tools Menu choose Render UVW Template. A property window will show just click on “Render UV Template button”

Another window will show and that is now your UVW Template.

You can now save it as JPEG and edit it whatever 2d authoring tools you like to paint your mapping. Don’t forget to use Layers and to save your work as a PSD Image to keep all the layers and text.

For the final Map, turn off the Screenshot-Layer and save the image flat either as TIF or JPG.

Apply the picture as Diffuse Color Map (Back to 3D Studio Max)

- Choose an empty Material Slot in the Material Editor, go down to the Maps

Section, apply a new Bitmap as a Diffuse Color Map and don’t forget to click on

Show Map in Viewport.

- The Map should be applied as you painted it in Photoshop.

To see your output Click on Rendering >> Render or press Shift + Q.

Final Output:

Have Fun! :D
