A Ride to Philippine Sceneries

-Khris Marie SanDiego

Have you ever wander to Philippines’ remarkable and historical landmarks by just riding a jeepney? Well, you don’t have to go to several terminals and spend big amounts of money for fare just to do so! You can already access a complete tour to these sceneries by just sitting in front of your PC and by playing the Jeepney’s Journey.

The Jeepney’s Journey is an E-learning game with a pure Filipino concept. It is the first-ever E-learning game programmed and designed by Filipino graduating students of Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), Quezon City namely Emil Justin Jaranilla, Paulo Angelo Lapus, and Ma. Christina Quitoriano, all BS Information Technology students.

Jaranilla is the lead programmer and designer while Quitoriano and Lapus are responsible for voice/sound and 3D development of the game, respectively. They began creating the game by June 2010 and accomplished it by October with straight and non-stop work. The Jeepney’s Journey was a thesis study presented to the TIP community last February 7-9 through a student research contest and an exhibit. Jeepney Journey won the First place in Student Research Presentation and Second place in Student Research Exhibit.

The game comprises of three levels: Level 1- Araneta Center Cubao to EDSA Shrine, Level 2- Quirino Grandstand to Rizal Park, and Level 3- Roxas Blvd. to Fort Santiago. There is a voice over telling the history of the landmarks the jeepney passes by and there is also a learning assessment at the end of every level and the player cannot proceed to the next stage without passing the review. The jeepney’s performance improves each level but the game definitely becomes more difficult and the destination becomes farther. At the end of the final level, a newly-designed jeepney is the ultimate prize for the player.

The group used the programs Unity 3D (for programming), 3Dsmax for 3D Rendering,  Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator (for 2D design) and Adobe Sound Booth (for mixing and editing of sound effects) to create the game. They also used a Core2Quad Processor and a powerful computer hardware that cost more than Php 10,000.

The game was featured on Unang Hirit GMA 7 last March 4 2011. It was discovered by the show’s researcher named Val Origenes thru his friend named PJ who witnessed the game during the student research exhibit and thru our Facebook fan page. After the show, Jeepney Journey got 370 more likes within 6 hours and it’s still growing.

The success of the E-learning game was a pride not only of the creators, but also of the Filipinos as well.

As the Lead Programmer of the team I would like to thank the following person for being a part in creating and enhancing the game concept, development and support. Khris Marie Santiago for helping me to submit the article to the GMA Researcher. Elsa V Isip, Mr. Erise, Ms Calanda Mr. Edson Talla for enhancing the Filipino Concept of the game. Our adviser Mr. Cabilles for the programming techniques and other faculty member and staff of Dept. of CITE for the full support. Special thanks to Photchi Group for helping me to carry my desktop during the research exhibit. Also thanks to Dr. Rabago and Dean Bart for everything.

So what are you waiting for? Let us now begin to travel Philippines through the Jeepney’s Journey. :)
