Stone Statue Effect [Photoshop CS5]

August 23 2010  Categorized Under: Graphic Design  14 Comments

Hello Readers. Whew. I am still busy creating 3d models and coding C# and JavaScript for our thesis game development (Hope we will able to  pass this thesis whew). And now I got this very short time to rest my eyes, and to write design tutorials using Adobe Photoshop CS5.  BTW This tutorial will introduce the use of Dodge tool to create some tricks and basic masking techniques.

Here’s Our Requirements:

High Quality Stock Image

Stone Textures

Adobe Photoshop (Any version can do but I use CS5)

Now Let’s Start. :)

YES! he is my brother. Photo taken by Johans Lucena wee

First step is Delete the background of your stock image.

Adjust the Brightness and Contrast. [Image >> Adjustment >> Brightness/Contrast]

Brightness: 30 Contrast: 30( It depends on the lighting of your stock image.)

If you’re done, Desaturate the image by pressing [Shift + Ctrl + U]

The next step we are going to use the dodge tool to brighten up the darker

areas in the image such as the eye brows or hair.

For Eye brows set the range to Midtones and Exposure to 21%

For its clothes, set the dodge tool’s range to Shadow and set the exposure to 30%

Okay. For the next step we are going to apply the stone texture to the image.

Fill the entire image with your stone texture. Just like the image below.

You can adjust the opacity to see where the stone crack is placed and make sure to put it back to 100%

Now the next step is we have to create a layer mask that the texture is only covering the cropped image.

All you have to do is hold down the Ctrl Key and click to the image 1 copy layer. Then click on the Add layer mask.

See image below:

To allow us to change the color of the texture, we need to adjust the hue and saturation settings.

All we have to do is to hold down the alt key then click to the

Create new fill or Adjustment Layer [Hold down the mouse] >> Hue/Saturation

Follow the image below.

Now you are almost done. All we have to do is to change the color mode of the mask layer to multiply.

If the output is a little bit dark, click on image 1 layer,

Adjust the level options by holding down the alt key,

Click to the Create new fill or Adjustment Layer [Hold down the mouse] >> Levels

Move down the white area slider and move to the left until you get your desired brightness for your image.

Final touch is to flatten out the skin; all we have to do is to blur the image.

Just activate the image 1 copy layer, and go to filter >> blur >> surface blur.

It will just blur the image but maintain the surface. Just adjust the threshold and make some experiment with this because all photos are different.
